Tomorrow Oprah will join twitter on her show with Ashton Kutcher. I believe this will mark the beginning of the end of the Twitter star. Soon we will see many other celebrities follow Oprah which will inevitably lead to everyone realizing how much they don’t really matter in the Twitterverse.
Twitter will still be a great tool to communicate with your network of friends and followers but the days of being popular because of your follower count are soon to be over. Some people are pushing Twitter to remove the follow count as if that will even matter. That won’t matter, the rich will always get richer and there is nothing you can do about it. Twitter was an exciting new frontier and now it will become just like any other social medium. Hiding how many followers each person has won’t make any difference.
I think the most important thing that people need to realize is that you need to stop relying on Twitter as your marketing vehicle. Twitter is and will always be a tool but you need many tools in your arsenal. Twitter was a powerful tool and still is but it’s power will start to diminish. Be smart and diversify your means of communication because the party is soon to be over.
